Tower Bridge, looking east, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

This view, which was taken at the moment of the official opening, shows the bridge with the bascules raised to allow the Trinity yacht to pass through. In each tower is a hydraulic lift, by which foot passengers are taken when necessary to the high level bridge, there to continue their passage across to the other tower, whence they enter another lift, and are taken down again to the lower level. Vehicular traffic is conducted on the lower bridge only, and is, of course, arrested when the bascules are raised.
