Rotten Row, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

It is by this name that is known the tract, stretching from Hyde Park Corner to Queen’s Gate, which is kept apart for the sole use of equestrians. Parallel with Rotten Row is “The Drive”, which extends along the same distance. On a fine day this is one of the most characteristic sights of London. In the season the “Drive” and “Row” are thronged from 11 to 1, and again from 5 to 7, with fashionably dressed people riding, driving, walking or seated on chairs provided at a cost of one penny. On Sunday mornings, after Church, crowds of Ladies and Gentlemen promenade here, forming what is known as the “Church Parade”.
