The Mansion House, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

The Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor, was built by Dance, 1739–52, and is of Portland Stone. It is situated in that continuation of Cheapside called The Poultry. The Egyptian Hall, the chief apartment, used for banquets and balls, was originally a courtyard. In it may be found several statues by British Artists: “Comus” by Lough; “Griselda” by Marshall; “Caractacus and Egeria” by Foley; “Genius and the Morning Star” by Bailey. The Lord Mayor’s Police Court is in the interior of the building, and is open to the public from 12 to 2. The Portico is in Corinthian style. Permission to view the State Apartments may be obtained by written application to the Lord Mayor’s Secretary.
