Hampstead Heath, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

A stretch of real open country, and one of the most picturesque spots within a walk of the heart of London, is a favoured and much loved resort of London holiday-makers. Some years ago it was a good deal encroached upon by builders, but fortunately the whole heath, 240 acres in extent, was purchased by the Metropolitan Board of Works for the use of the public, whose possession of it for the future is thus assured. “Jack Straw’s Castle”, on the highest part of the Heath, is an interesting old Inn, and other places of refreshment for the holiday-maker are the “Spaniards” and the “Bull and Bush”. Hampstead Heath stands 430 feet above sea-level, and the view to be obtained from it is interesting and extensive.
