The Crystal Palace, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

The Crystal Palace was erected at Sydenham, about 7 miles from London, in 1853–4 at a cost of nearly £1,500,000. It was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, and is constructed entirely of glass and iron. The grounds cover 200 acres and are among the finest in Europe. The Palace and grounds are open daily, the charge for admission (except on special days, which are duly advertised) being 1s., or by season ticket (annual) for 1 guinea. Admirable concerts are given in the Concert Hall, which can seat 4,000 persons, every Saturday from October to April, and frequent dramatic performances and occasional flower-shows are held. There is a well-stocked Aquarium and a good Picture Gallery, for admission to which no extra charge is made. Among the many attractions of the Crystal Palace we must not omit to mention the splendid displays of fireworks which are given at night during the summer season.

Other observations

The history of Crystal Palace may be seen at wikipedia. The facade in this photo does not match those shown there, and it seems this may be the side of the building not facing onto the park. In that case, only the centre and northern half of the facade is seen in the photo.
