Trafalgar Square, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

This square, one of the finest in Europe, is a favourite spot for meetings and demonstrations. On the south is Nelson's Column, erected here to commemorate his death at the Battle of Trafalgar, October 22nd, 1805, and the victory gained by the English Fleet over the united forces of France and Spain, thereby frustrating Napoleon's intention of invading England. A statue of Nelson, by Bailey, surmounts the column, which is of granite, and 145 feet high. It was erected in 1843, and the cost—about £40,000—was subscribed voluntarily. The four lions, which lie on pedestals branching out from the column in the manner of a cross, are made of bronze and were modelled by Sir Edwin Landseer. In the Square are also statues of Havelock and Napier; an equestrian statue of George the Fourth, by Chantrey; and one of Gordon, by Thorneycroft.
