Guy's Hospital, c.1894

Original description by George Birch in 1894

Situated in St. Thomas's Street, Southwark, was founded by Thomas guy, a London bookseller. It contains 500 beds, and relieves 5,000 in-patients, and 70,000 out-patients every year. It is supported by voluntary contributions, the annual income averaging about £30,000. The chapel attached to the hospital contains a marble statue of the founder, and the celebrated surgeon Sir Elstley Cooper was buried here. Out-patients are seen daily at 12 o'clock, and visitors are admitted on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free and no recommendations are required.

Other observations

It seems likely that the central domed roof, with spiky bits on top, was part of this building but it might possibly be a building beyond. It is not seen in the modern photo (below) which is however taken from a slightly lower camera position.
